Endovenous Ablation proves to be an economic alternative
A recent study by Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital shows that treatment of varicose veins with Endovenous Ablation is just as effective, but far less expensive than traditional vein stripping surgery. Dr. James St. George, vein specialist and founder of Jacksonville’s St. Johns Vein Center, agrees. In fact, vein stripping has largely given way to a less costly, less invasive laser treatment over the past fifteen years – with multiple benefits to patients.
What is the process Endovenous Ablation?
Endovenous ablation involves carefully applying heat energy by a laser or radio-frequency catheter to damage the vein tissue. Scar tissue forms and closes off the vein, restricting it from being able to swell. Unsightly blue lumps and the often accompanying pain soon disappear. No surgical incision is necessary – Just a small skin puncture that heals without stitching.
The retrospective study compared costs of patients undergoing surgical stripping of a leg vein with those of patients opting for endovenous ablation at the hospital or physicians’ office within the Henry Ford Health System between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011. Endovenous ablation proved consistently less, often by several thousand dollars, than costs for surgical vein stripping.
Many benefits of endovenous ablation
The savings and benefits of endovenous ablation over vein stripping surgery aren’t just financial. The non-invasive procedure also affords patients fewer complications, less pain, shorter recovery times and virtually no scarring.
